Is it difficult to photograph senior pets?

In short, no. I have over 13 years of experience photographing pets, a journey that began at Chicago's city shelter (CACC).

Working with senior pets simply requires extra patience. I move at a slower pace to ensure they are comfortable, taking time to assess how they feel about me, the environment, and my equipment. Once I have developed a game plan, I share it with the client so we are aligned on the approach.

It is always incredibly rewarding to help document such a cherished member of your family.

Did you have any concerns or doubts before the session?

Stanley can get quite distracted by his nose, so I was a bit concerned that he wouldn't stay focused for the camera. However, Marty was cool, calm, and collected (and armed with treats and loving pets) which immediately put my concerns to rest.

What are his favorite activities or unusual likes?

Stanley loves exploring outside (no grass blade can go un-sniffed!), visiting grandma and grandpa in Wisconsin, and convincing mom to give him snacks (he has the cutest begging stance). He is the most stereotypical beagle; snoozing, sniffs, snuggles, and snacks rule his world.

Who is his favorite friend, human or pet or both?

His favorite human friends (besides mom, of course), are Matt (his loyal roommate), grandma, and grandpa. His favorite pet friend is his beagle cousin, Jethro (grandma and grandpa's pet).

Her foster mom calls her the "perfect weirdo".

Why? Because she just transforms into pure moments of joy. We see as her laughing out loud in sweet manner, and simply to herself nonetheless. She also gets random zoomies of bliss throughout the day.

What are Cali’s favorite activities or unusual likes?

Cali is an expert de-squeaker of dog toys. She has yet to find one she can’t destroy in under 3 minutes. She loves long walks and giving squirrels a run for their money.

Did you guys have any concerns or worries before Cali’s session? If so, was I able to overcome any?

Cali’s pretty anxious in new situations, so we were worried she wouldn’t be able to calm down enough to show her sweet side in photos. Marty did a great job of letting her unwind at her own pace and come to him. The resulting photos captured her perfectly. Does Cali have any best friends, pet or human? 

Cali’s selective of dog friends (though she’s been really sweet to her new foster bro). Humans are more her jam. Anyone with a treat makes the cut.

How old is Cali? 

Cali turned 12 this past May. We adopted her when she was 8 and her previous owner could no longer care for her.
